SKIN MICROBIOME
Born from microbiome science in health and animal nutrition, Evonik developed advanced skin microbiota models for skin care applications. Consisting of robust microbial consortia representative of human skin microbiome, our models integrate interactions and interdependencies between microorganisms growing under realistic conditions, to offer accurate and reproducible methods for microbiome testing.
Evonik Biotechnology Hub has been exploring the role and mechanisms of the microbiome for over 10 years taking up some of the most strategic challenges of our times such as finding alternatives to antibiotics in animal nutrition. Combining this expertise to our skin knowledge, we’ve developed advanced skin microbiome models, providing screening capabilities for personal care innovation. Those models deliver high predictive accuracy and reliable results to support microbiome related claims.

Redefining the determination of microbiome friendliness
Testing the microbiome friendliness of cosmetic ingredients & finished products remains a challenging task. While many in vitro methods fail to mimic microbial communities with their complex interactions, in vivo approaches are not only costly and time-consuming but also dependent on each individual's microbiome.
Embracing the fundamentally eco-systemic nature of the skin, Evonik has developed robust microbial consortia, composed of up to 12 strains selected among the most prominent inhabitants of human skin, growing in co-culture under realistic conditions. Thus, considering the interactions and interdependencies of species living together in the skin ecosystem, those models open the door for robust claim substantiation for microbiome friendliness.
